Two dominant dance music figures arrive in the UK this weekend, one who's popularity mostly stems from UK dance music magazine endorsements and colossal marketing budgets, and the other whose popularity has boomed thanks to the priceless and revered skool of in-vogue adulation, as well as the ability to disc jockey very well indeed.
One will play music to several thousands of their voters in a stadium sized location, the other, (who has quite a seismic number of fans too), must make do with a restricted (but very well packed) audience, a fraction of the size.
If time travel was available and they zoomed back in time to switch locations and marketing armoury, the big venue would probably be a bit too big for the other, whilst in the smaller settings of the other venue and its host, you might just find the space to host a novel game of glo-stick croquet. But this won't happen any time soon, even with a time machine, with current club rules…
Across the pond, the Miami WMC gears itself up for a sunny week of very expensive partying. Not sure how cost effective it is though for labels these days. Now that you can inexpensively send a digital file of your latest release to your desired recipients (rather than lugging over boxes of records and cds to promote), surely the amount of earth pounds paid for the flights (even more now thanks to BA), hotels, and entertainment, does not recoup and make profit of said promoted release? If we are missing a trick here and it does, please sign us up…
Those of you staying put here in Londinium, its alright, there are some blooming marvellous disco occasions on the cards, complete with scintillating djs and live acts to boot; Ricardo Villalobos, Surgeon, Doc Martin, Ali Love, Damon Martin, CJ Macintosh, Josh Wink, Kasra, Trevor Jackson, Alex Metric, Sebo K, Marcus Worgull, Mark Henning, Caspa, Skream, The Bloody Beetroots, Prime Cuts, Neverdogs, Giles Smith, Alex Arnout, Guy Williams, Andrew Weatherall, Kode9, David Mancuso, Simian Mobile Disco, and Moodymann are among the selectors. There's lots of dressing up options too, more bingo, festival reunions, and a party where even the kids can come (for a bit).
